A fairly early edition of Fontaine's fables with a "new commentary" by M. Coste. Some contemporary notes to front free end papers and a signature to the end of the commentary.

Condition: Clearly in original binding which (not surprisingly) are heavily worn particularly to the spine and edges of the boards. Front board has a hole in the leather. Both hinges cracked. Binding cracked in a number of places internally. Internal pages generally good with some light and sporadic marking and foxing. Binding a bit loose now. Still a nice and original copy.

A rather nice set of volumes on history. Unfortunately, as we do not speak French, we cannot provide a comprehensive description of the contents.

Front cover to Vol I has a split that runs around half way down the hinge and board is slightly warped. Hardback First Edition in marbled board covers wih calf spine, published by Chez Les Principaux Libraires, Paris.  The volume is undated but we believe it to be c.1880 (though it could be earlier).  Dimensions: 27.5cm x 18.5cm approx.

We do not speak French so cannot give a good description of this book. However, it appears to be a satirical volume about Paris and its population something along the lines of "Punch" in England.  The title page description is as follows:

"Moeurs et Coutumes, Caracteres et Portraits des Habitants de Paris, Tableau Complet de Leur vie Privee, Publique, Politique, Artistique, Litteraire, Industrielle, etc, etc."

6 volumes of what we believe to be an 8 volume set of these comprehensive works on the war between Germany and France between 1870 and 1871.  The volumes cover the conflict in incredible detail including troop numbers, troop locations, maps and plans of the terrain and batles and much, much more. The volumes that are missing are volume 5 of the main text and volume 3 of the appendices (the third volume contains maps). The missing volumes are currently being offered elsewhere on the net.
